Wear or bring the shoes you use most, and bring a list of your medications. If you have diabetes, bring your latest lab results if you have them.
The podiatrist examines your feet, skin and nails, checks circulation and feeling in your feet, and may watch you walk. Corns, calluses and thick nails can often be treated at the same visit. If you need more testing or another specialist, your podiatrist explains the next step.

Should I see a podiatrist if I have diabetes?
Yes. Diabetes can reduce blood flow and feeling in the feet, so a small cut, callus or ingrown nail can turn into a wound that is slow to heal. A podiatrist checks circulation and sensation, trims nails and calluses safely, and treats problems early.
Can an ingrown toenail be treated in the office?
Yes. The podiatrist numbs the toe and removes the part of the nail that is growing into the skin, usually in one visit. You get aftercare instructions before you leave.
What helps heel pain?
Heel pain is often caused by plantar fasciitis, irritation of the band of tissue under the foot. Treatment usually starts with stretching, supportive shoes and rest from the activities that make it worse. If the pain continues, a cortisone injection can help.
